Engineered! STEAM Challenge

Our Red Bank Middle School Rockets recently participated in the Second Annual Engineered! STEAM Competition. The competition is organized by Ms. Allison Wiesel, Science Teacher at Shrewsbury Borough School. This year the competition was virtual and included students from Red Bank Middle School, Red Bank Charter School, Shrewsbury Borough School, and Markham Place School in Little Silver. Judges were educators from the Engineering Academy at Red Bank Regional High School.

Mr. Schwarz, RBMS Project Lead the Way teacher, and Ms. Maiello, RBMS Science teacher, supervised our Rocket participants and assisted with the facilitation of the Peninsula-based student competition. After careful selection, Red Bank Middle School entered two teams, one comprised of Grade 7 students and one comprised of Grade 8 students. Nolan Campos and Gustavo Soriano represented Grade 7 while Maria Mejia and Samantha Martinez represented Grade 8.

All participating teams were provided materials to create and build a prototype to solve two scenarios that change from year to year. This year, Scenario One required the creation of a device to remove snow from rooftops in New England. Each team was provided 40 minutes to brainstorm, plan and construct their snow removal device. At the end of the 40 minutes, the teams shared turns reporting out in detail to the judges. Subsequently, the judges scored each team based on a pre-determined rubric. Scenario Two required teams to design something to eliminate the snow mounds that pile up in the parking lots in their local municipalities. For this round, students had only 35 minutes to collaborate and build!

The Rocket teams competed from the RBMS auditorium which permitted a small audience. Ms. Maiello’s science classes were able to view the competition live while encouraging their classmates. RBMS Music teacher, Mr. Hurd, also played a significant role in assisting with the facilitation of the competition.

With the socially distant but enthusiastic audience watching, our teams rose to the occasion and performed flawlessly under pressure. Our Grade 8 team used the experience of competing last year to their advantage. Maria and Samantha were ready for any and all questions from the judges. When the judges announced the winners, the result was what we expected: the Red Bank Middle School Grade 8 team won 1st Place! At the end of the day, they burst into Ms. Maiello’s room screaming, “We won first place!!!” and their excitement filled the entire room. Our Rockets winners were awarded for their hard work with $100 Amazon gift cards!

As always, we are so proud of our teams for competing. They embody the Red Bank mindset of BIA, Best in America, as well as a #BestSelf attitude. We continue to inspire BIG Dreams and provide a launching pad for young  Rockets at RBMS - our students are on their way to a bright future in STEAM!
