All Means All

The Red Bank Borough Public Schools opened the new school year in a deliberate but exciting manner during these challenging times. September started with a 6-day series of Professional Learning opportunities for all staff members - we are an “AVID” learning community.  Our first day kicked off with an energetic and relevant presentation by the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Northeast States Director, Patrick Briggs. Mr. Briggs is a celebrity in the AVID world.  Need a refresher on AVID?  AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. But it is more than that - it’s about building relational capacity, holding students and staff to high expectations and promoting collaboration, inquiry, and organization. Especially during these challenging times, AVID’s focus on equity and relationships aligns perfectly with our reopening of schools in this “new normal” making Patrick’s presentation the perfect start to our year. Patrick came to his position as AVID Northeast States Director after 11 years as the assistant director, then director, of AVID’s Southern Region States.  Before that, he spent 15 years as a teacher and administrator in Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District in Texas.  It only takes a moment with him to learn that Patrick believes that any perceived “achievement gaps” are the result of opportunity and expectation gaps that adults and educators must work together to close. Throughout the presentation entitled, “All Means All: Bridging the Achievement Gap”, our district staff were encouraged to examine their mindsets and practices in considering does “all mean all” when educating our students. Patrick used our District Mission Statement to pose the question: Under the current circumstances, how do we ensure that we are driven by the needs of our children to provide a safe, nurturing, and challenging learning environment for EVERY student EVERY day?  By aligning his message with our mission, Patrick offered the subtle reminder that we are here in Red Bank to inspire BIG Dreams and help our students achieve them.

This year’s AVID focus is not new. AVID is a stalwart of our curriculum and a contributor to our culture. The program is led by our dynamic AVID District Director, Mary Wyman, and our AVID Lead Teacher, Amy Campbell.  In fact, in 2014 current Red Bank Primary School Principal, Maria Iozzi was recognized by the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association and the National Association of Elementary School Principals as New Jersey’s Visionary Leader and the National Distinguished Principal for her role in implementing AVID at Red Bank Middle School. Additionally, in 2018 former Rocket student Taniaya Morris served as a featured speaker at the annual AVID Summer Institute which was held in Philadelphia, PA. That year Taniaya earned the coveted speaker spotlight over nearly 1,000 other applicants and shared her story of self-reflection, goal-setting, and perseverance with the more than 3,000 educators in attendance!

We are proud of our commitment to AVID and the impact it has on our school community and culture. Considering the challenges across our country today, equity and building relationships are more important than ever. The Red Bank Borough Public Schools are primed for an outstanding school year and grateful to have had Patrick Briggs as our Keynote Speaker. Patrick’s attitude and words energized our staff to continue to believe in the #RBBisBIA mindset of delivering a high-quality education to each student so they can make choices in life that will lead to their BIG Dreams and personal success. With AVID as a pillar, we will continue our journey to be the best school district in America so we can be certain, we are the best for Red Bank.

"The goal of education in America must be for the purpose of teaching all of our students to the very highest levels—for lifting up all people."
