Kids on Broadway Delights Audiences of All Ages

The Red Bank Borough Public School’s partnership with Count Basie Center for the Arts has given us countless opportunities for our students. One of the most popular partnerships is the Kids on Broadway program. Students in grades two and three rehearse several times a week after school for about three months. This year's theme focused on the magic of Walt Disney in “Kids on Broadway: Wish Upon a Star.” Performers auditioned for solo singing and narration roles.  The young group of students all worked hard to learn choreography and new songs.

In January, the group of polished performers traveled to the Red Bank Senior Center and to The Atrium at Navesink Harbor to share their talents with our older community members. Both audiences were delighted to have our students sing, dance, and perform for them. They sang and danced to numbers such as, “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,” “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo,” “Mickey Mouse March,” and many more! Performers even went out into the audience to chat with our new friends at the conclusion of each performance. This is another special opportunity for our students and community thanks to our wonderful partnerships throughout Red Bank!

After they were done “touring Red Bank”, Kids on Broadway members came back home and performed for the entire school, and then finished up with a final night performance for family, friends and community members. Then the group received an invitation to perform at the Red Bank Borough Council Meeting on Wednesday, February 13th.  The group provided an abridged version of their Wish Upon a Star program and provided the audience with a glimpse into the great work being done in the Red Bank Borough Public Schools.

The program is directed by a former educator, Ms. Joan Kilcommons along with Mrs. Carol Boehm, Red Bank Primary School's Music Teacher. Ms. Kilcommons is currently a teacher in the Educational Outreach Program for the Count Basie Center for the Arts. Ms. Kilcommons had this to say about the program and our students: "It’s my pleasure to work with the wonderful students at Red Bank Primary School. As a teaching artist from Count Basie Center for the Arts, I strive to involve the students in a creative and supportive process which involves learning music, choreography, and narration. Our main focus is sharing the final presentation with our senior community. This inter-generational project benefits our students and seniors alike. I am very proud of their performance and of their ability to reach out to our seniors."

Yvonne Lamb Scudiery is the Vice President of Education at the Count Basie Center for the Arts and a tremendous advocate of the arts in our schools. After one of the performances, she stated, "We are so thankful to our sponsors and very proud to see such commitment to excellence from both the Production Team and the young enthusiastic performers. Kids on Broadway is joyful in every way!" Program sponsors include:

Mary Owen Borden Foundation

The Provident Bank Foundation

Ocean First

New Jersey State Council on the Arts

The partnership between the Count Basie Center for the Arts and the Red Bank Borough Public Schools gets stronger every year as we strive to provide arts-rich experiences for the children of Red Bank. Both Ms. Kilcommons and Mrs. Boehm are excited about what Kids on Broadway will bring to our students and community next year!
