RBMS Grad: Tanaiya, Tanaiya, Tanaiya

Recent Red Bank Middle School graduate Taniaya Morris served as a featured speaker at the annual AVID Summer Institute which was held in Philadelphia, Pa.  AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a nonprofit organization that changes lives by helping schools shift to a more equitable, student-centered approach. The Red Bank Middle School has implemented AVID as a student support program for over ten years. The Summer Institute is AVID's annual professional learning event where educators from across the country come to learn the latest in AVID methodologies and strategies.  A highlight of the event is the General Session which features educators and/or students that have been selected to share their AVID story. This year more than 1,000 students and educators entered the 2018 AVID Summer Institute Speaker Contest and Red Bank Middle School’s own Taniaya Morris earned the spot! More than 3,000 educators were in attendance to hear Taniaya share her story of self-reflection, goal-setting, and perseverance.

Taniaya became part of the AVID Elective Program in the 7th grade and quickly learned to utilize the AVID experiences, methods, and strategies to her advantage.  By working closely with the AVID Elective Teacher, Amy Campbell, and through her own determination, Taniaya was able to achieve both academic and personal success.  Her story featured specific instances where the elements of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR), have helped her to improve her academics, self-motivation, and organization.  She also found success by honing in on her “soft-skills” in terms of building relationships, improving self-confidence, and networking. Taniaya also excelled as a student leader in sports, and community activism and service.  Mary Wyman, AVID Director at the Red Bank Middle School, said that Taniaya’s story and successes speak to the potential of all of our students; with the right supports and mindset, big dreams can come true! A video of Taniaya’s motivational speech is shared online to an AVID audience of more than 200,000 educators.
