What will our students learn?
Our students will become strong global citizens of the 21st century. Students will engage in interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication at the Novice level. Students will be introduced to Chinese Characters, and PinYin (the Romanization system of Chinese often used to teach the language). Students will develop their communicative and cultural competence, which are valuable transferrable skills in any profession they pursue.
Students in grades 4-6 are enrolled in an exploratory Chinese course. This year they will learn basic Chinese language (numbers, body parts, common verbs and adjectives) through cultural topics such as the Great Panda, Zodiac Animals, and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Students in grades 7-8 are enrolled in an all year course that meets every other day. We will explore everyday Chinese culture. Topics may include, but are not limited to: self-introduction, family, food, school life, time and weather, occupations, hobbies, transportation and travel.
What activities will we use to acquire Chinese?
We teach through the use of comprehensible input, communicative and functional language. We use TPR, movie-talk, TPRS, dialogues, interviews, voice recording, games, songs, and stories in our classes so that students can acquire Chinese language and culture through multiple intelligences. We also integrate technology in our learning activities with the use of our school's 1:1 Chromebook program that allows access to Google Applications, Quizlet, Kahoot, EdPuzzle, and other educational resources.
