The 2014-2015 school year represents the eighth year of the implementation of AVID-Advancement Via Individual Determination at both the 7th and 8th grade levels. Students selected to be part of this program have a regularly scheduled AVID class as an elective class. The mission of AVID is to ensure that all students, and especially students in the “middle” with academic potential capable of completing a college preparatory path, will succeed in the most rigorous curriculum, will enter mainstream activities of the school, will increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.  In addition, the AVID Elementary curriculum continues to be implemented in its fifth year in grades 4-6.  The AVID Elementary curriculum provides embedded sequential academic skills that focus on: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading Skills (WICOR); utilizes organizational skills as a main focus; develops student success skills; and supports and provides a solid foundation into the upper grades in middle school and high school.
The 2014-2015 school year will continue with its fifth year of implementation of Project Lead the Way (PLTW).  PLTW units of study consist of Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics, and Energy and the Environment. All fourth through eighth-grade students participate in this course of study that integrates science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), while engaging students in rigorous inquiry-based learning activities. This engaging and hands-on curriculum will further encourage and enhance problem-solving skills, develop critical thinking, and continue to foster creative and innovative reasoning for all of the Middle School students.
The integration of Chromebooks across all grade and content levels continues to be an essential strategy that allows thorough integration of 21st century learning skills throughout the curriculum.  Teachers integrate technology in meaningful and effective ways in each and every content area. Chromebooks, Interactive Whiteboards, and web based learning management systems are just a sampling of technologies that are in use to enhance learning and push student creativity to new heights while helping address the wide variety learning styles found in each and every class.
The use of Chromebooks enables our students to seamlessly utilize Google Drive, giving students and staff access to their work anytime, and anywhere.  The collaborative nature of Google Drive brings teachers and students together, working in partnership, or within small groups, and allows for students to provide real time and ongoing peer feedback.  Students are given the ability to explore Apps for Education and make their own choices with their learning.  Collecting data through Google Forms, analyzing data through Google Sheets, leveraging research tools within Google Docs, creating amazing presentations through Google Presentation, and taking assessments online, which facilitates more timely feedback, all have culminated in a truly educational experience for each and every child.
The music education program is designed to give the students a strong foundation in Music Theory, Music Appreciation, and Instrumental Music. The goal of the music class is to develop a passion for music while understanding the technical aspects such as reading, analyzing and performing music. The music class, as well as, the added band and strings lessons are designed to prepare students for an instrumental ensemble such as Concert Band and Jazz Band as well as the next level of Music Education at the High School level.  The Middle School also offers the opportunity for students to take part in strings, orchestra and advanced orchestra.  The winter and spring concerts allow for students to perform for the parents and community while showcasing their hard work and talents for all to enjoy. Art education is project-based learning in which students gain knowledge about Art History, Art Criticism, Aesthetics, as well as Art Production.  Their learning is designed around particular themes at each grade level in which they will create various projects to demonstrate their learning
The Middle School After School Program will offer a variety of opportunities throughout the 2014 – 2015 school year.  Academic support and enrichment opportunities will be provided to our students through the educational after-school services provided in the Red Bank Borough School District.  The extended day program will continue to focus on providing opportunities in the performing arts, cultural enrichment, tutoring, student leadership and community service learning, and character development.
Red Bank Middle School has established positive and collaborative relationships with the parents and families. The Parent-Teacher conferences and Parent Portal has enabled teachers, parents, and students to stay abreast of students’ academic progress. Literacy and Math Family Nights continue to support and promote connections between home and school. Teachers, parents, and students take part in these fun-filled, educational and hands-on programs in order to present educational concepts in a way that is meaningful and that the whole family enjoys.
The Middle School community, as a whole, believes that all our students will achieve and aspire excellence.  Everyone is committed to creating a learning environment for all students in which they will use 21st Century Skills to think critically and creatively to become compassionate, kind, and valuable citizens of an ever changing global society.
